Teacher Leadership
I enjoyed this article because I feel like stepping into this masters program has put us in a leadership position. We are going to be researching and working on issues in our school that need leadership. The author of the blog makes many great points about when to and when not to take on leadership roles and finding a balance between our classroom duties and our additional responsibilities. I know that for myself balance is sometimes pretty hard. It feels as though there are not enough hours in the day sometimes. Saying this though reminds me of something a Super Camp (Quantum) leader said to me when I told her that I didn't have enough time-she said-it's not that you don't have enough time, it's that you need to use the time you have better-those were not her exact words but you get the idea. As we take on this leadership role we are also taking on the added responsibility and time commitment. How are you doing with the balance of work and this masters program?

ReplyDeleteMy son at the age of 4 was always saying that we can make time...I believe his idea....
ReplyDeleteWell for me it has to do with passion. I make sure to do the things I believe in to the best of my abilities. So..I get up to train for cycling at 4:30am...show up to work..ready to face the day and provide my students the best teacher I can be...spend time with my own family daily..as a whole and on individual levels...and make sure I have set time to also do my masters work daily and then also whenever I have a few spare minutes add it in to these passions areas(5minutes of this vs. a conversation in the hallway w/staff member pertaining to none of the above). I use the same keys that we teach our students..balance is important but Integrity is a cornerstone for me...If I expect my students to walk the walk...well then I better make sure I am doing myself...btw at the age of 40 I race in the pro category in cycling and give that same level to my family and my students and my own education because I learned the magic of making time.
The dissertation topics site was scary. I realize that my job IS the Master Program, but my goal is to make as much of the stuff we do in the program relevant to your work. If you find yourself wondering why on earth we are doing something, or what this has to do with you, then it is time for you to make some noise. :)
ReplyDeleteGreat article, Jenny! I still consider myself a fairly new teacher, and haven't thought of myself as a leader yet. However, this class is teaching me about important issues, and helping me see through a different set of lenses. I hope that I can share what I learn from this experience to "lead" my school into some exciting change! On the topic of balance, I find it SOOOOO hard to balance time with family, teaching, and my Master's. I'm also the WORST at making excuses with my imbalance of time - I've got to work on that. :) From what I read on Brian's reply, maybe he can teach a class on time management. :)
ReplyDeleteI haven't ever wondered why we are doing something during this masters program. I find it all very relevant. I agree that maybe we need a time management 101 course from Brian.
ReplyDeleteI am constantly coming up your fresh tutorial to get superior my blog. Hope you all the best.
